{"id":1282,"date":"2018-06-21T14:32:51","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T13:32:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org?p=1282"},"modified":"2018-06-21T14:33:49","modified_gmt":"2018-06-21T13:33:49","slug":"fiabilite-des-sciences-participatives-un-debat-a-lechelle-europeenne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org?p=1242","title":{"rendered":"Reliability of citizen science data: taking the debate to the European stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Are citizen science data reliable?\u00a0 This recurring question was the subject of one of the sessions at the international European Citizen Science Association conference which took place in Geneva from June 3<sup>rd<\/sup> through the 5<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 CREA Mont-Blanc, represented by Marjorie Bison and Colin Van Reeth took part in the debate and brought back these reflections on their experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1246\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1000px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1246\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180605_ECSA2018_c_Science_et_Cite_2-1.jpg\" alt=\"ECSA 2018, conf\u00e9rence internationale des sciences participatives \u00e0 Gen\u00e8ve \u00a9 Science et Cit\u00e9\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180605_ECSA2018_c_Science_et_Cite_2-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180605_ECSA2018_c_Science_et_Cite_2-1-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180605_ECSA2018_c_Science_et_Cite_2-1-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>ECSA 2018, international citizen science conference in Genevea\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a9 Science et Cit\u00e9<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>11:30am, Tuesday, June 5th.\u00a0 This morning, we\u2019re participating in a \u201cdialogue session\u201d organized by the ECSA 2018 conference.\u00a0 In the \u201cAssembl\u00e9e\u201d room at Geneva\u2019s Plainpalais, six speakers are getting ready to present their work on citizen science data and its reliability.<\/p>\n<p>The concept of the dialogue sessions is relatively simple:\u00a0 following a brief 2-minute presentation by each of the speakers, the audience of around 60 people divide themselves between six different tables (one for each of the presenters) for a 20-minute discussion.\u00a0 At the end of the 20 minutes, it\u2019s a giant game of musical chairs, and our small audience is replaced by a new one and a new discussion ensues\u2014and this process is repeated until we get to talk with all of the attendees.<\/p>\n<h2>Reliability of the citizen science data in the Ph\u00e9noclim program<\/h2>\n<p>At the CREA Mont-Blanc table, we are proposing a discussion about the quality of citizen science data: Can we have as much confidence in the data coming from schools as in the data coming from science professionals? Does the data coming from different categories of observers provide the same results?\u00a0 Using our own work with the Ph\u00e9noclim program, we fed the discussion with subjects examined in some of the articles previously published on this blog:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org\/?p=959&amp;lang=en\"><em>Citizen Science, the Past, Present and Future of Data<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(as well as the French-language articles\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org?p=914\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Les donn\u00e9es de sciences participatives sont-elles fiables ?<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org?p=922\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fiabilit\u00e9 des donn\u00e9es Ph\u00e9noclim<\/a>.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>The goal of the discussions is not only to present our data and results but also to get suggestions and advice from other professionals about how best to analyze the quality of data and how to keep participants engaged in the program year after year (with a specific focus on schools).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1248\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 500px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1248\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0139-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Marjorie Bison et Colin Van Reeth \u00e0 l'ECSA 2018 \u00e0 Gen\u00e8ve \u00a9 CREA Mont-Blanc \" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0139-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0139-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0139-1000x750.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/blog.creamontblanc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0139.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Marjorie Bison and Colin Van Reeth at ECSA 2018 in Geneva\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a9 CREA Mont-Blanc<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Improving citizen science practices<\/h2>\n<p>Over the course of our discussions, we learned that schools are frequently asked to participate in citizen science projects, but that other organizations have had similar experiences as CREA Mont-Blanc: they struggle to keep schools invested in their projects.
