Sentinel Lakes: Scientists turn their attention to high-altitude Alpine lakes

During April 30th’s Science Sandwich, Jean-Baptiste Bosson of ASTERS, a glaciologist by training and currently the coordinator of the Sentinel Lakes network, presented on the history and outlook for the Alp’s high-altitude lakes.

Altitude lakes are rich and fragile ecosystems that reflect past and present changes in climate, the natural environment and human activities. In the context of intensification of global and climatic changes, managers of protected areas, researchers and public users of these lakes, have been meeting since 2012 within the Lacs Sentinelles network, hoping to better understand these ecosystems, monitor their evolution and better adapt management and protection measures. This presentation discussed Lac Sentinelles’ unique scientific adventure and the first results obtained.
